Christmas countdown widget for iPhone

Christmas 2026 is on Friday, December 25. Here is how to keep the countdown on your iPhone Lock Screen or Home Screen so you see it every time you pick up the phone. A number on a wallpaper image stays the same until you make a new one; a widget goes down by one every day on its own.

Add it to your Home Screen — free

On the Lock Screen

  1. Install Countdown Widget: Any Event, tap + and pick Christmas from the ready-made events, or type a name and set the date to December 25, 2026.
  2. Touch and hold the Lock Screen until the Customize button appears at the bottom, then tap it.
  3. Tap Add Widgets under the clock, or tap the widgets that are already there.
  4. Choose Countdown, then tap Done.

On the Home Screen

  1. Touch and hold an empty area until the apps jiggle.
  2. Tap Edit → Add Widget (on iOS 17, tap +), search for Countdown and swipe through the sizes.
  3. Tap Add Widget, drag it into place, then tap Done.

You can also touch and hold the Countdown app icon and pick a size at the bottom of the menu. iOS 27 adds a bigger size: Apple says extra-large widgets “let you see more information from your favorite apps right on the Home Screen” (What’s new in iOS 27). Countdown offers that size too, and every size is free.

Questions people ask

Is there a free Christmas countdown widget for iPhone?

Yes. In Countdown Widget: Any Event every widget size is free, on the Home Screen and the Lock Screen, and you can keep as many countdowns as you like. Pro unlocks the Pro backdrops, your own photos, the Pro typefaces and the Lock Screen Live Activity; the widgets are not part of it.

Will the Christmas countdown come back next year?

Yes. Christmas is always December 25, so with Repeat yearly on — the ready-made Christmas event already has it — the countdown starts toward Christmas 2027 the day after Christmas 2026.

Can I put a Christmas photo behind the countdown?

Using your own photo behind a countdown is part of Countdown Pro. The free version has its own backdrops, and the widget works the same either way.

Is the Lock Screen widget the same as a Live Activity?

No. The Lock Screen widget sits under the clock and is free. The Lock Screen Live Activity is a separate, Pro feature.

Can I make the widget bigger than large?

On iOS 27, yes: touch and hold the Countdown app icon or widget on the Home Screen and choose the extra large size. Earlier versions of iOS stop at large.

Does it work on Android?

No. Countdown is an app for iPhone and iPad. On Android, look on Google Play for a countdown app with a Home Screen widget.
